Grey And White Kitchen Dining Room Ideas
In order to make the large, open rooms of a northern California home more livable, designer Myra Hoefer's idea was to choose a white, monochromatic palette and mix in lots of texture. The result? An effortless blend of West Coast ease and French elegance.

A Light-Filled Living Room
The bay window—a focal point in this Northern California living room—seemed to call for furniture arranged according to classical ideas of symmetry. But designer Myra Hoefer breaks up the pairs with different Brancusi-esque side tables, from West Elm, for more interest. She had the antique claw-foot coffee table and the pedestals for the vintage French torchères lacquered in white to match. The 13-foot sofa is slipcovered in Romo Esina linen; the Louis XV—style chairs are covered in Summer Hill's La Donna.

A Soft and Subtle Palette
A monochromatic palette works best when there are lots of textures to catch the eye, like the Pipa cocktail tables in cast resin by Oly, with their filigree effect. Hoefer prefers lamps to overhead lights and does them with "huge lampshades that give you a sense of the moon." Custom tufted sofas covered in Rogers & Goffigon's Somerset linen, in Marble. Bora Bora jute rug from Merida Meridian.

A Clean, Simple Fireplace
The Louis XV—style bergères are new, not old, made in France "with big, wide seats," Hoefer says. "Nothing silly." Then she brings in accessories like that stool, "which is like adding some great pieces of jewelry." The fireplace is faced in plaster mixed with marble dust, to add depth and texture. Antique candelabra have "my kind of finish—anything that has aged in a wonderful way. So easy on the eye." Sculpture by Dan Corbin.

Modern and Antique Dining Room
Hoefer plays with the contrast of light and dark, new and old. Verner Panton molded plastic chairs from Design Within Reach slide under a 10-foot-long antique table, "narrow enough so you can really converse," Hoefer says.

Modern White Kitchen
Both the Vassaro chandelier by Gregorius/Pineo and the metal hood remind Hoefer of a classic French mansard roof. She designed the A la Reine stools with goat's feet.

The Great Room
In this view of the great room, the entry foyer is on the left, the dining area is on the right, and the living area is behind you. The three-legged farm table, topped with a huge clay pot that Hoefer had glazed in white, sets the scale and invites you to run a hand across it as you walk in. With walls and ceiling painted Benjamin Moore's Winter White (used throughout the house), the voluminous room "looks like the skeleton of a whale," Hoefer says. The Cassiopeia chandelier from Ironware International, over the dining table, has a celestial scale. Ajax side chairs by Oly are pulled up to the Hollandaise table by Astier de Villatte, who also makes the armoire. These new pieces have a vintage air that blends right in with an 18th-century French bombé chest and a gilded antique barometer.

Modern White Bathroom
Carrara marble and mirror add glamour to the bath, and the mirror expands the space. Oly's Pipa chandelier brings back the filigree motif. The Chase Erwin fabric on the Roman shades is dotted with sequins that catch the light.

Modern Traditional White Bedroom
Shades of cream in the master bedroom create a restful backdrop, "but the room is not really done until you add that organic touch of color with flowers or a bowl of quail's eggs," Hoefer says. Friuli four-poster by Patina. The Patricia Edwards ottoman is covered in white hide. Wing chair by Lee Industries slipcovered in Safari in Daim by Manuel Canovas.
